Judy Garland

Almost gave up on her hair, but pushed on. Not thrilled, but learned a bunch (like don't choose references where the hair is severely backlit and CURLY).

Canson Bristol Smooth, 8' x 10'
Graphite - 2H - 2B

I think you did a good job on the backlit hair :)

Thank you - it was a challenge, that's for sure. I almost gave up, but I pushed myself - I wasn't totally unhappy with how it ended up, but I wasn't thrilled either ... it's a process, learning realism - I'm learning to be content with small victories. :D

You got it bud, we won't improve by playing safe and the more you push the boundaries of difficulty the faster we improve. Mistakes are made along the way but they just take us one step closer to getting it right. I like those small victories too ;)

How long did the hair take you?
If you took steps through it please explain.
The #1 toughest part to draw for me ; is the hair and you do amazing on the hair in all your portraits.

It's hard to tell how long the hair took - I worked on it over several days. Pretty much I use a 2B pencil, kneaded eraser and soft brush ... hair is difficult, it takes a lot of time and patience ... thank you so much for the compliment!! :D

Okay, thank you, I use 2H all the way up to 8B for the hair. I will use the 2B for next weeks portrait, guess I'll have to get a soft brush (I've been using my fingers and paper rolls tip things)I have a hard time erasing to make thin hair lines even when I make a point with the kneaded eraser. Thank you again for your advice, I will try it out.

You're welcome. =]

I have trouble getting thin lines with the kneaded eraser too - after I knead in "thin" lines, I clean it up with a pencil, either 2H or 2B ... sometimes, I'll cut a piece of a white eraser and use that - it doesn't always work.

I've heard that when you use pencils softer than 2B that they don't blend well because of all the clay. When you put in the 2B lines and then brush them with a brush, the graphite moves around nicely. Once you're done and you've got the hair the way you want it, you can add darker areas with softer pencils, but don't blend them out much.

I've also used stumps for hair, making sure that I follow the direction of the hair. My favorite brush is really cheap - it's a makeup brush, I think it's an eyeshadow brush. You definitely don't need anything fancy.
